Padmanava Mishra, born at Sonepur Raj on 1st October 1940, had a special craze for nature observation. It shaped his fancy to draw & paint from his childhood. A 4-year Diploma-holder in Arts and Crafts from Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan in 1966, soon flowed into a unique artist with a mind to delve into the delicate ineffable mysteries of the profane and the sacred. He served as an Artist-cum-Photographer in the deptt. Of Botany, Gangadhar Meher College (Autonomous) from 1967-1998.During this tenure he made special attempts to start the deptt. of Fine-Art in the college to impart Fine-Art education to numerous students. He also founded an institute of Fine-Art, “Chitrabhumi” (Affiliated to Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh) in Sambalpur in the year 1991.Thousands of students have successfully completed Diploma and Degree courses from this institute in all these years.

Summary of Exhibitions:
First State level art exhibition was held on the occasion of Oriya Yuva Lekhak Sammelan, 5th convention, Bolangir.This was graced by Dr. Karan Singh, Shri Kamleshwar and Shri Umakant Malaviya.
Exhibition on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee Celebration of Gangadhar Meher College, Sambalpur.
He has also successfully participated in a number of exhibitions organized by “Bhumika”, Bolangir, “Youth Forum” and “Rotract Club”, Sambalpur, Western Orissa Sanskrutik Sammelan, Sambalpur and “Chitrabhumi”, Sambalpur etc.
His paintings on the Srimad Bhagvad Gita, were exhibited at a solo art exhibition titled “ Eighteen steps to salvation” organsised at the Rashtriya Lalit Kala Kendra, Bhubaneswar. This exhibition was inaugurated by Sri Soumya Ranjan Pattnaik, Editor, Sambaad.
A three-day photo-poetry-painting exhibition was organized at the Soochana Bhawan, Bhubaneswar that was inaugurated by Sri Ramakanta Rath, Former Chief Secretary, Orissa.
A solo Exhibition of Fine-Art on the backdrop of excerpts from the poems of Dr. Srinivas Udgata “Lord Jagannath in poems and paintings” was organized at the Soochana Bhawan, Bhubaneswar. This was inaugurated by Sri Sarat Kumar Kar, the then speaker, Orissa Legislative Assembly.
An exhibition based on the humanistic cravings of Santha Kabi Bhima Bhoi & his original series “Light & Dark” based on the Oriya poem Jaha Mana Taha (taken from the Oriya poems collection “Aprameyeshu”) written by one of the most reputed poets of India Padmashree VidyaVachaspati Dr. Srinivas Udgata was organized at Soochana Bhawan, Bhubaneswsar.This was inaugurated by an eminent Cine artist of Orissa, Sri Sarat Pujari.
His latest masterstrokes depicted the timeless ideologies of Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s “Madhushala” through an exhibition that he organized on the 27th Nov’08 at Hotel Swosti Plaza, Bhubaneswar.This was inaugurated by Sri Ashok Vajpeyi, Chairman of Lalit Kala Academy, the national academy of Art in New Delhi. Also present on the occasion were Padmashree Vidyavachaspati Dr. Srinivas Udgata, Dr. Neerja Madhav, Programme executive, Prasar Bharti, Varanasi and Dr. Manjula Chaturvedi, Senior Professor, Deptt. Of Fine-Art, Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth, Varanasi.
Has also displayed his thematic paintings at huge events like the Powercon2010 & HR Convention-Bhubaneswar-2011.

Awards and Recognitions:
On Sri Mishra’s works and life, special programmes have been aired and telecast by Akasvani and Doordarshan. AIR, New Delhi has honoured him for his commendable participation in an Art Competition, “Virodhabhasa”.
He was a member of the Orissa Lalit Kala Academy.
Mahanadi Sahitya Samsad; Sonepur has felicitated him with Mahanadi Kala Samman.
“Pashim Orissa Vikas Parishad”, Bhubaneswar, “SETU”, Sambalpur and District Journalists Association, Sonepur have also honoured him.
The most prestigious of all is the recognition that Sri Mishra got in the Sarala Award’2005 where he was conferred with a special citation for his outstanding contribution to Art in Orissa
Has been also conferred with the Paschim Orissa Sanskruti Samman-2008 organised by the Sambalpur University, Jyoti Vihar, Burla.
Chitra Satyam Samman by Satyam Shivam Sundaram, kalahandi on the occasion of All India painting exhibition and workshop organised by The District council of culture, Kalahandi and the Lalit kala Academy, Odisha.
Chitraguru Samman presented by Ankan Trust, Sambalpur in the year 2010.
A special recognition by the District Council of Culture, Subarnapur on the occasion of Subarna Loka Mahostav in the year 2011.
Has been awarded the “Life Time Achievement Award” at the HR Convention-Bhubaneswar-2011 in the presence of legendary People & Business Leaders of the country.
Awarded by the Working Artists Association, Sambalpur in the year 2012.
Awarded the “Paschim Odisha Gauraba Samman-2014” by the Hirakhanda Sanskruti Samaj, Cuttack.
Awarded the “Chitragupta Samman-2014” by the Chitagupta Kalyan Sangha, Sambalpur.
Received the “PRAJATANTRA KALA PURASKAAR-2015” from Sj Naveen Patnaik, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha at a Grand function organised by the PRAJATANTRA PRACHAAR SAMITI,CUTTACK
Awarded the “Saroj Biswal Kala Samman-2015” by the Bhadrak Pujya Puja Sansad at the 44th BIJAYA MILAN,Bhadrak.
A special paper on Padmanava Mishra’s contribution to Art was presented in a seminar “Indian Art Heritage in a Changing World-Challenges & Prospects” at the Banaras Hindu University on 27.02.2017. The paper was titled “Mirage of Odisha-A sketch on Padmanava Mishra”.
